The Amazon-owned platform, Twitch, working towards obtaining the licenses required to allow music livestreams
Since most of the events are being cancelled or postponed due to Covid-19. More and more Livestreams and Virtual Events are being celebrated. There are many different platforms to make a Livestreams as Soundcloud, Mixcloud or Twitch among others.
The last one, this platform is one of the favourites for gamers and DJs. Till now, DJ were able to play any song without taking into consideration the music they could or not could play. Live streamers did not have to think about the music copyright or licensing issues.
Nowadays, Twitch declared: “Over the last several months, we have done our best to manage this situation on behalf of both rights holders and creators”.
They continued. “One of the mistakes we made was not building adequate tools to allow creators to manage their own VOD and Clip libraries.”
“In the meantime, we’re focused on building tools to better help you manage VODs and Clips and providing licensed music options like Soundtrack, while we explore all options,” Twitch said.
Later on, the platform explained to the users that they are able to play recorded music, unless they have the rights and permissions to do so.
They addressed: “Unless you own all rights in the music, or you have the permission of the holder of the necessary rights (s). Doing this is the best protection for your streams going forward.”
Even though this is a major problem for the platform due to the possibility of a disagreement between Twitch and the music industry’s copyright holders, thus the cancellation of music live streams, Twitch is trying its harder to work towards a solution.
They have committed to do a better job by achieving all the rights to allow music live streams as well as by banning users who did use unlicensed music and not delete it.
